X Factor sings Take That

E-mail Print PDF

Although calling Take That the kings of pop may be a little overblown, they certainly have a good selection of songs - ideal for a week of the UK X Factor 2008.

Alexandra Burke opened the show with a sultry, then growling soul version of Relight My Fire and certainly set the bar for all the others to match. Both Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell said Alexandra had one of the best voices they'd heard in the UK.

Following advice from Gary Barlow, Ruth Lorenzo added some lightness to her delivery, creating contrast so her huge voice could shine at the big moments. Doubt that Love Ain't Here Anymore has been sung with such power and passion before! As Simon says, absolutely sensational.

Just to prove and underline how great the girls are this year, Diana Vickers received warm praise from Gary and Mark of Take That and turned in a skillful version of Patience. Diana has an unusual voice and her difference is worth supporting.

X FactorAfter a shaky start, Eoghan managed a reasonable version of Never Forget although his voice is not mature enough yet. Maybe another year or two will help, because half the time he didn't really sing but just accompanied the choir.

We suffered another terrible performance from JLS who are just not good enough. Too many people have told them they are okay, and they are not. No strong voice, harmonies well out of tune, and zero personality. They couldn't even get one love song to an acceptable level - sure don't want to hear them destroy a million others!

Also struggling is Rachel, who continues with attitude rather than talent.

Another poor performance, and Rachel not able to sing the great Rule The World without turning it into a vocal catastrophe.

One funny aspect is the way the judges are trying to hedge their bets. If every act has turned in "one of the best performances of the night" then what are they listening to? And do they really think every act is a strong contender for the final? Time they started being honest.

Here's our chart to help the judges understand:

If you like boring and self-serving music with little if any development of artistic integrity, there is plenty of evidence to pick from, not least Pink, Nickelback and Linkin Park.

All of which bodes ill for the future.
