X Factor's Michael Jackson Night

The songs of Michael Jackson are some of the classics of all time. He worked with fantastic producers and musicians and song-writers. And, of course, had tremendous talent. For the X Factor contestants to take on his songs for Live Show 2 was a big ask. Some excelled and some failed.

Austin Drage With all having to sing from the same source, we had a chance to spot those with talent and craft. Some singers can make the voice an instrument in its own right, and we are lucky there are a few on X Factor 2008. Austin let rip and made the 'rock' version of the song his own, while Laura managed to turn her song on its head and built to a fantastic finale.

Girlband and and Scott struggled to put much of themselves into the songs. Heal the World did not lift much above a very competent school choir, while She's Out Of My Life was a sweet try but fundamentally weak.

So once again it seems like the girls are way out in front on talent, craft, passion and power. Laura and Ruth are top of our leader board. Ruth's delivery of I Can't Stop Loving You was spine-tingling.

Alexandra and Daniel both sang quite well, but that was all. Both will get a percentage of sympathy votes and both are better than good karaoke, but only just on these performances.

Diana is unique and definitely made her choice work in large part because she can put a whole new spin on virtually any song. You are unlikely to have heard such a lilting and infectious take on Man In The Mirror ever before!

Unfortunately JLS again failed to impress. Am not certain any one of them has a good enough voice, and The Way You Make Me Feel exposed their straining and lack of staying in tune. There just is not enough power and passion.

Rachel and Eoghan finished the show, and they were a tasty snack but definitely not the main meal. They need to be much better than just good.
