X Factor sings Take That

E-mail Print PDF

Although calling Take That the kings of pop may be a little overblown, they certainly have a good selection of songs - ideal for a week of the UK X Factor 2008.

Alexandra Burke opened the show with a sultry, then growling soul version of Relight My Fire and certainly set the bar for all the others to match. Both Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell said Alexandra had one of the best voices they'd heard in the UK.

Following advice from Gary Barlow, Ruth Lorenzo added some lightness to her delivery, creating contrast so her huge voice could shine at the big moments. Doubt that Love Ain't Here Anymore has been sung with such power and passion before! As Simon says, absolutely sensational.

Just to prove and underline how great the girls are this year, Diana Vickers received warm praise from Gary and Mark of Take That and turned in a skillful version of Patience. Diana has an unusual voice and her difference is worth supporting.

X FactorAfter a shaky start, Eoghan managed a reasonable version of Never Forget although his voice is not mature enough yet. Maybe another year or two will help, because half the time he didn't really sing but just accompanied the choir.

We suffered another terrible performance from JLS who are just not good enough. Too many people have told them they are okay, and they are not. No strong voice, harmonies well out of tune, and zero personality. They couldn't even get one love song to an acceptable level - sure don't want to hear them destroy a million others!

Also struggling is Rachel, who continues with attitude rather than talent.

X Factor 06 sing-off

E-mail Print PDF

The sing off for Live Show 06 of the X Factor 2008 was a refreshing change. Two of the poorest singers - Daniel and Rachel - were in the bottom two. Not a great surprise the judges chose Rachel to stay.

For our money, Alexandra, Diana and Ruth are the strongest contenders. Whether the public vote will support that remains to be seen.

X Factor Live 06 Best of British

E-mail Print PDF

Alexandra Burke was superb last week and just as good this week. Her voice is a wonderful instrument and imparted a richness, smoothness and polish to that wonderful classic, You Are So Beautiful. If she recorded it I'd buy it tomorrow.

Ruth

Ruth Lorenzo had a shock last week and pulled out the stops to deliver a powerful version of Angels, so hopefully the whole package will save her this week - great song, great voice, great presentation. Just a slight crack in one of the high notes prevents a perfect 5 in our chart.

Not far behind Alexandra in terms of vocal talent is Diana Vickers and it was great to hear her back with another unique and appealing version of a current classic. As Simon says, Diana is a fantastic talent and deserves a great career in music - irrespective of hidden public votes on X Factor.

Starting a Best of British theme with It's Not Unusual is rather obvious, and that was the problem with Daniel's version - obvious and karaoke. And straining and struggling.

Meanwhile pretty boy Eoghan got all sorts of comments about how attractive and sweet he is. He looks good and sings flat.

Also struggling is the constant and tedious snippets of families of the contestants. Grandmothers are important to their family, as of course are children. But neither matter to a singing contest. So Rachel is a mum, and a shouter, and has yet to sing well. So it was no surprise her version of Amy's You Know I'm No Good was so poor.

The Beatles had to be included, and the best you could say about JLS is that it was a good schoolboy attempt. They have no power or colour in their voices. Look, the Beatles were fantastic and JLS are pathetic. Embarrassing.

So that's it. Another week, another win for the remaining outstanding girl singers. At least the shock of last week appears to have roused the public to start voting about singing ability rather than sympathy appeal.

X Factor outrage

E-mail Print PDF

The problem with X Factor (and other shows) is secrecy. For example, anguish about Laura being ejected from X Factor 2008 is a direct result of the show HIDING the results.

If the shows revealed the true results there could be no complaints.

We pay money and vote. Therefore the TV companies have a moral obligation to reveal the true results. Only then would the competition become honest and fair.

Also the contestants and their families would be spared the DISHONEST results process. There is nothing more dishonest than when the show presenters say:

"in no particular order"

which is a lie - of course it is in an order. The point is, which order?

X Factor 2008 First Disaster

E-mail Print PDF

The gremlins are back! The votes are hard to believe! The secrecy continues! The whole process is suspect because the truth is not shown!

The public pay their money, but do not know the true result. For a so-called singing competition, why are we told good singers get low votes? And by what margin?

Because ITV are allowed to take money without being honest and truthful about the real results, the public are being ripped off. But the contestants are ripped off even more.

Every week we hear about how much time and effort goes into each person and their dreams. Not to mention the effort and sacrifices of family and friends. And every week that effort is cast aside in a cruel and dishonest way by the show's producers. Even Simon Cowell was astonished - so why does he not fix the rot?

There is no way Laura and Ruth should have been in the sing-off. Click on Read More to see our chart

X Factor Live 05 Mariah!

E-mail Print PDF
Mariah Carey night was never going to be easy for the X Factor 2008 finalists, but Live Show 05 produced a couple of surprises.

Alexandra
The biggest and best surprise was the amazing power and control of Alexandra Burke and her version of Without You was brilliant. Without doubt the best performance of the night and at last Alexandra is reaching her full potential.

Just as Mariah has never been slow to express full feelings in a song, Ruth Lorenzo delivered both soft and passionate in her steamy version of My All - fantastic.

When Laura White started singing while playing piano, there was a moment of fear, and then the voice let rip when Laura stood up. Overall, the music skill of Laura shone through and let's hope the public agree.

Diana_ill
Meanwhile, the wonderful Diana Vickers was pronounced too ill to sing, so here's hoping for a full recovery of that magic voice.

Daniel sang better than some other times, but his voice is just not strong enough. He is still middle-of-the-road and the best you can say is "okay".

The problems with Rachel continue, and deciding to ignore other opinions and choosing her own song and own way to do it was dreadful. Shouting rather than singing showed how immature she is, and lots of notes were off-key. And crocodile tears don't work either.

The problems with JLS is they are not good enough singers. Their attempt to sing One Sweet Day was not good. The solo voices cracked and squeaked, and the harmonies were amateur and karaoke. Disappointing.

Eoghan was swamped by the band and the backing singers - sweet voice and all that, but thin and boring. At least Anytime You Need A Friend is a great song.

X Factor disco

E-mail Print PDF

The public made good choices, as Austin and Rachel were down the bottom of our chart for the Live Show 4 of X Factor 2008. Rachel sang quite well in the sing-off but still seemed fuelled by attitude rather than vocal talent. Harsh comment maybe, but her early promise has been lost.

Austin sang sweetly, again, and maybe that is part of the problem. There just is no grit or determination coming through, in either his voice or his attitude. Rachel needs some of Austin's vocal craft, and Austin needs some of Rachel's fire. The judges decided to give Rachel another chance.

X Factor 04 Disco

E-mail Print PDF

As Dannii explained, disco sounds easy to sing but is often very tricky, with a combination of soul vocals and dance rhythms tripping up all but singers with talent and skill.

Diana VickersLeading from the top this week was Diana Vickers, who can make any song sound like it was written specially for her. To make Call Me sound so new and fresh was a masterpiece of vocal ability and personality.

After last week's power, who expected Laura White to lift the roof again - but she did. The colour, tone, depth and clarity of her voice is a joy to hear. Laura has a fantastic vocal instrument and could go straight into a recording studio tomorrow. Terrific.

Ruth Lorenzo also has a great voice, a bit more shrill and tending to shouting at times, but perfect for disco! Where Laura can growl and Diana can purr, Ruth lifted No More Tears with her passion and power.

Will Young acted as their vocal coach this week and gave lots of great advice, not least to Alexandra Burke as he pointed out the way she strains at times, and that such effort can be bad long term. So Alexandra's On The Radio was a much better rendition than the examples of the past two weeks, which Simon also noticed.
