With a combination of flourish and lack of mainstream correctness, Entertainment Weekly stirred up a comments nest with its pick of the best albums of 2009.
Our interest is in the mix of artists chosen as well as the actual music.
Of particular note is the gender balance, with girls easily on top in so many respects:
- 5 girls
- 3 guy bands
- 1 girl-vocalist band
- 1 guy
The next appeal to us is the vocal talent from the girls. Every one of the EW list has a strong and distinctive voice. There are other strong female vocalists who’ve made an impression this year, yet if they were included the Top 10 could have become Girls ARE the Top 10.
But let’s not take just the iTunes and Billboard charts as supporting evidence. We Are Hunted gather their lists from what people are saying about artists and their music on blogs and social networks like Facebook and MySpace. They also scan message boards and forums, Twitter and P2P networks to compile the top songs by day, week, month and year.
Hunted have The XX at No.1 for the year, followed by Yeah Yeah Yeahs at No.2, plus Florence at No.5 and La Roux at No.8.
Our posts on a selection of the Best Albums of 2009 cover quite a range of styles but the message is clear -Â Girls Rock!!
