Another contender for our track of the year is Drumming Song by Florence + the Machine, from the album Lungs. Florence is a performer as much as a singer, able to capture the essence of her quirky songs with a combination of dance and costume that always seems so right. Being a redhead with long legs was a definite focus for the video director of the song, but there is never a moment when the music is forgotten as the thrilling melody rises to its climax.
EW were just as entranced: “23-year-old Londoner Florence Welch seemed to emerge fully formed with this swirl of luminous balladry, jangling psychedelia and brazen rock swagger.” They went on to say Lungs evokes memories of iconoclastic females like Kate Bush and Björk - and that none of those overshadow Welch's “spectacular” voice for a moment. Our rating: 5 Stars
