After years at the top of the music trees - in the UK and USA - courtesy of X Factor and American Idol, Simon Cowell is reduced to attacking anyone who holds a different opinion to him.
Cowell's anti-girl stance, so evident on American Idol early this year and very clear on X Factor this past two months, appears to reflect his general decline into negativity. His destruction of the hopes of Lucie Jones are well documented. He has become petty and sniping, regularly trying to browbeat Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole, just like he did with Paula Abdul.
But now Cowell has tried to browbeat anyone who fails to accept his musical muscle. The decline of Cowell now means:
anti-girl on American Idol- anti-girl on X Factor
- total loss of integrity as a judge on either show
- millions less viewers on American Idol
- ITV shuts down X Factor blog because of too much criticism
- Cowell called a "coward" to put ratings above musical talent
- Cowell threatens to cancel future X Factor contests
Why such a decline, you might ask. Simple. Cowell is in a deep phase of negativity, his anti-woman hiccup affecting other areas of his life to such an extent that he no longer hears the music. He now calls mediocre male singers "brilliant" while brusquely dismissing great talent like Lucie Jones (photo, right).
Cowell's latest outburst is against music-lovers on Facebook and other social media sites like Twitter. Cowell cannot bear these new tools on the web because:
- his hypocrisy and negativity is open to immediate challenge
- hundreds of thousands of people can air opposing points of view
- tens of thousands of people can agree to combat Cowell's attempts at dominance
But perhaps even more upsetting for Cowell is that other people can speak out without being shouted down by him. Here is a tiny selection of the way music-lovers now see Cowell:
- Sounds to me like Mr Cowell assumes his X-factor winner has the divine right to number one ... [Facebook groups are] not ruining anyone's party, just a bit of healthy competition! Surely that makes it all the more fun! - Kate
- It's not a campaign about Simon, it's about the music and people choosing what they want to buy. Calling half a million people stupid and cynical is stupid and cynical. - Rager
- “Me having a No 1 record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly,” Cowell said. So why does he always release the winner's single in Christmas week? Cowell's a ... hypocrite. RATM for #1 - GregPalin
