We said it last year and it looks the same this year - girls consistently do better than boys ... IN MUSIC. Doesn’t seem to matter which yardstick is used. Most digital sales. Most tour earnings. Best selling American Idol finalists. In all cases, the girls are on top.
So when Rolling Stone announced their Readers Poll of the past decade we wondered if our observations would hold true. They did, and in an impressive way.
Top 10 Singles of the Decade

Even allowing for RS being weighted towards American tastes, we still expected its readers would tend towards rock and male. It’s no surprise that Green Day took the top spot in Singles with Boulevard of Broken Dreams. But then the girls rule:

5. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
8. Avril Lavigne - Complicated
9. Kelly Clarkson - Since You’ve Been Gone
In summary, Beyonce and Mariah knocked the posturing but basically wimp metrosexual males for six (Kayne West, Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, etc). Only U2 managed to gain another male slot into the top 5 with Beautiful Day.
The same dominance by the girls is reflected in the albums.

Again, Green Day took the top spot, American Idiot winning the Albums list. But the girls did even better in the top 15 results

The significance of the results can be debated, but look. Avril and Britney have succeeded despite huge opposition to their musical styles and supposed lack of talent. Kelly Clarkson has TWO albums in the top 15, proving the public may be better at recognising singing talent than the A&R ‘experts’ at the labels. While Gaga and Aguilera have forged success based on individuality and passion.
