After last week's power, who expected Laura White to lift the roof again - but she did. The colour, tone, depth and clarity of her voice is a joy to hear. Laura has a fantastic vocal instrument and could go straight into a recording studio tomorrow. Terrific.
Ruth Lorenzo also has a great voice, a bit more shrill and tending to shouting at times, but perfect for disco! Where Laura can growl and Diana can purr, Ruth lifted No More Tears with her passion and power.
Will Young acted as their vocal coach this week and gave lots of great advice, not least to Alexandra Burke as he pointed out the way she strains at times, and that such effort can be bad long term. So Alexandra's On The Radio was a much better rendition than the examples of the past two weeks, which Simon also noticed.
The choice of Wishing On A Star for Austin Drage was clever, as it suited his high register and clear diction. Surprisingly good. A good song can save a singer and Could It Be Magic helped Eoghan, but could not disguise how often he sings flat. He misses so many notes that cute may not keep saving him.
Overall the guys are well below the girls in vocal talent so far this year, and JLS are no exception. They just do not have a magic voice in the group, nor convincing group harmonies. And all often suffer from flat notes and wayward harmonies.
Although the judges often mention X Factor is a singing competition, am puzzled that Daniel has made it this far. Great guy and all that, but he just does not have the vocal range. He really struggled with Don't Leave Me This Way and I can't imagine enough people would buy his records.
Rachel's performance was boring and she is definitely not helping matters with her superior attitude. Rather than Lost In Music she is lost in her own head space.
