American Idol returns with 12 "hot" girls

E-mail Print PDF

After the weeks of dreary failures and never-ending emphasis on the bad rather than the good, American Idol at last presents two hours of actual music-making. First up is the sing-off between the twelve girls, and some of them were outstanding.

Lilly ScottEllen DeGeneres struggled to find the right words at times but the overall impression was that Ellen had a good ear for excellent music-making. A promising start by the new judge, and she supplied the "hottest" quote of the show.

Lilly Scott (left) presented the most quirky and appealing song of the show.

Randy Jackson kept his feet on the ground and provided the most balanced musical critiques, as usual.

Michelle DelamorSimon Cowell continued to give some of the contestants a harsh reality check, able to summarise both the musical and business issues in a few sentences. He is often not popular but is usually right. And, at last, seems to have lost his anti-girl bias of the past two years.

Michelle Delamor (right) was the most convincing and striking performer of the show.

Kara DioGuardi continued sniping at the good singers, however, showing she is still so jealous of girls with great vocal skills.

Here, then, is our exclusive scorecard on the first real chance to hear and compare the contestants for American Idol Season 9, 2010.

Girls on Top … at the Grammy Awards too

E-mail Print PDF

Just in case you had any lingering doubts about the dominant talent of the girls and women in the music industry, the 2010 Grammy Awards were a huge recognition of everything we’ve been saying regularly for the past two years. Just to be explicit so there is no confusion - Girls Rock and Girls Rule!!

Beyonce received 6 of the 10 Grammys she was nominated for, while Taylor Swift won four and Lady GaGa scored two. For singles and albums the girls stole the show. The list is long - yay! - and I’m sure you don’t need explanations of each award, so here’s the summary. Of note, of course, are the awards won by the girls in the Best Album and Best Song categories where they beat off any of the male contenders.

left: Beyonce in black Versace Atelier leather mini-dress; right: in Giorgio Armani PrivéFirst up, the incredible vocal and performance talents of Beyonce Knowles:

  • Best Contemporary R&B Album: I Am… Sasha Fierce — Beyonce
  • Best Female R&B Vocal Performance: Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) — Beyonce
  • Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: Halo — Beyonce
  • Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance: At Last — Beyonce
  • Two songwriter awards: Song of the Year and Best R&B Song for Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) — Thaddis Harrell, Beyonce Knowles, Terius Nash & Christopher Stewart (performed by Beyonce)

Equally hard-working and just as gracious and elegant in personal appearances as Beyonce is the Nashville princess, Taylor Swift:

  • Taylor Swift Fearless Grammy Award 2010Album of the Year: Fearless — Taylor Swift
  • Best Country Album: Fearless — Taylor Swift
  • Best Female Country Vocal Performance: White Horse — Taylor Swift
  • Best Country Song: White Horse — Liz Rose & Taylor Swift, songwriters (Taylor Swift)

So having gathered the albums and singles of the main categories into the Beyonce and Swift arms, the stellar energy that is GaGa was honored with two strong categories:

  • Best Dance Recording: Poker Face — Lady Gaga
  • Best Electronic/Dance Album: The Fame — Lady Gaga

The Grammy Awards 2010 - a great night for the ladies? You bet!

Disastrous start for VEVO – only 35 million visits

E-mail Print PDF

The new premium music video and entertainment service created in partnership by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Abu Dhabi Media Company is already in trouble. VEVO managed just 35 million visits in December, a remarkably low number given the hype and marketing muscle of the corporates behind it.

This is – or should be – a huge reality check for the music industry. The closing of Tower Records reflected the end of the old-school analog days, and the demise of imeem underlined the folly of trying to use old-style business practices online. Even with VEVO being run on the YouTube platform and picking up a large potential audience, the figures are dismal.

VEVO logoThe “Most Popular” music videos on VEVO also showed the problems of the service:  Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Drake, Lady Gaga, Jay Sean, Shakira, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift. Those artists will be popular anywhere BUT the problem is the inclusion on VEVO will just steal listeners/viewers away from other platforms.

Claiming “Music Evolution Revolution!” is just not backed up by the figures. The real Evolution and Revolution in music is happening elsewhere. For example, podcasts by trance DJs Above & Beyond already have 21 million listeners/viewers each week. In other words the immediate future of digital music is still iTunes and iPod, much to the concern of the majors.

Will VEVO bring us anything new? No. It is just a continuation of the old-school music cartels trying to channel our music appreciation – and it won’t work any more. Therefore we won’t spend new money via their platform. The real evolution of music marketing online will continue elsewhere – platforms like Pandora, Last.FM, MySpace and WordPress.

Michael Jackson helps increase music sales in 2009

Digital music sales increases have offset the decline in the “old technology” versions, increasing by 16.1% while Physical sales dropped by 12.7% year on year.

The 2009 figures for music sales from Nielsen SoundScan are a refreshing change of message from the “recession bites” stories from most business sectors.

The mix of what sells has changed, but overall music sales are up to reach a total of 1.54 billion units for the year in the USA. The 2.1% increase overall covers CDs, cassettes, LPs, digital albums and music videos.

digital musicThe big gains were all in “new media”:

  • digital album sales gained 16.1%
  • digital track sales climbed 8.3%
  • 1.1 billion digital tracks were sold in total
  • digital-to-vinyl LP sales grew 33% to 2.5 million

All the moaning - in print and on the web - about the “terrible” state of the music industry now sounds false, especially the high-profile claims:

  • accusations of piracy “destroying” the music industry
  • hand-wringing that the global recession will send music companies to the wall
  • old media saying online services like Google are plagiarists

Best Albums of 2009 - The Gender Mix

E-mail Print PDF

With a combination of flourish and lack of mainstream correctness, Entertainment Weekly stirred up a comments nest with its pick of the best albums of 2009.

Our interest is in the mix of artists chosen as well as the actual music.

best-of-2009-albums-chartOf particular note is the gender balance, with girls easily on top in so many respects:

  • 5 girls
  • 3 guy bands
  • 1 girl-vocalist band
  • 1 guy

The next appeal to us is the vocal talent from the girls. Every one of the EW list has a strong and distinctive voice. There are other strong female vocalists who’ve made an impression this year, yet if they were included the Top 10 could have become Girls ARE the Top 10.

But let’s not take just the iTunes and Billboard charts as supporting evidence. We Are Hunted gather their lists from what people are saying about artists and their music on blogs and social networks like Facebook and MySpace. They also scan message boards and forums, Twitter and P2P networks to compile the top songs by day, week, month and year.

Hunted have The XX at No.1 for the year, followed by Yeah Yeah Yeahs at No.2, plus Florence at No.5 and La Roux at No.8.

Our posts on a selection of the Best Albums of 2009 cover quite a range of styles but the message is clear -  Girls Rock!!

Best Albums of 2009 part 1 - Caribbean Sunshine

We think Russian Roulette could compete for song of the year, the passion-filled vocals reaching new heights and the insistent melody jumping into our heads just about every day. Never has the smokey nature of Rihanna’s superb voice sounded so perfect as on this track. Her range is in full effect as she soars to the high notes in the latter half of the song. The video could rate as one of the top 10 of the year also.

rihanna-rated-rThe video suggests the concrete jungle is a far cry from the sun-drenched beaches of Barbados, yet even the messy adult concerns of the past year have not destroyed Rihanna’s childlike pleasure in the thrill of music-making. Moving on? You bet. Our rating: 5 Stars

After giving Rihanna just a B for Rated R at first, EW changed their mind for the best of year list: “... the insidious pleasures of the Barbadian superstar's dark, defiantly uncommercial fourth album have sucked us in entirely. From bursts of spiky aggression on Hard to moments of pure, naked vulnerability on Justin Timberlake’s heartbreak symphony Cold Case Love, it emerged as a stealth stunner.”
