American Idol Final 2008

E-mail Print PDF

The 2 hour final was an interesting mix of music and American tv gloss. There was plenty of sparkle and passion, albeit not so much from the contestants.

Seal and SyeshaSyesha singing with Seal was one highlight, which suggested a few things about music in the 21st Century. First, Syesha lost out because she was a less safe choice than the two Davids. Second, the huge number of votes (almost 100 million) was surely going to favour middle of the road rather than exotic. But third, talent quests are the new powerbrokers in entertainment.

The six girls of the top 12 performed a medley. and their strengths and weaknesses shone through. Amanda still impressed the most, with Carly a close second. Well, that was until Donna Summer joined them on stage. Controlled power, emotional growls and crisp diction shone through, a wonderful example for any contestant to try to emulate. Which Syesha did in her brief duet with Donna.

The Carly Smithson and Micahel Johns duet revealed their considerable powers.  Both could be great solo successes, especially with the right songs. Both have got more genuine personality than the other ten put together, and  more importantly they can put that personality into their singing.

The six boys were less dynamic than Westlife, with only Michael standing out. Then Bryan Adams joined the six and his ability to add passion to what is a fairly ordinary voice was noticeable. He can growl, can rock and can infuse his lyrics with meaning and strength.

David Cook and ZZ Top with Sharp Dressed Man showed David's lack of unique talent. He can copy, perfectly, but we don't gain a lot from note perfect copying of ZZ Top or Maroon 5 or all the others he has used. Jason Castro was just as limp as usual, unable to express any passion.

Graham Nash and Brooke White singing together was smooth and suggests Brooke could do very well with an album of covers. Not sure she has the raw talent to carry a career on her own, but great songs, sung well, could achieve considerable sales, especially with a country slant.

One Republic continue to underwhelm, and it was no surprise when Archuleta joined in. Bland, middle-of-the road pop and no lasting value, which will be Archuleta's fate if he gets trapped in that style. Again, there will be a career, but maybe not at the greatest heights.

Jordin Sparks can do wholesome and middle-of-the-road, BUT she can also stretch her fantastic voice, she can work with an audience, she can engage and entertain. Hey, and she can smile with conviction and warmth, so much better than the self-conscious Davids.

Carrie Underwood continues to win awards, and with Last Night will surely gather another few million admirers. This is great modern music making, whether you call it pop, rock, c&w or whatever. Carrie's powerful voice continues to impress year after year.

The final top 12 song medley was a confirmation of the slight weakness of the contestants this year, compared with previous years. Even 12 of them singing Freedom didn't achieve anything like the original. No passion, no grit, no standouts. A shame. But when George Michael stepped on the stage, the whole tone was lifted a dozen notches. Vocal and personal presence was there for all to see and hear. His passion for the song, his expression of the emotion - no wonder there were a few tears in the audience.  He held the song with his skill, he held the audience with his feeling, and he showed what a great talent he continues to be.

Simon Cowell summed it up well. The Davids are both tryers. But for me they are nowhere near the talented winners of previous years. Time will tell.
