Instrument

Being able to play an instrument is a new thing that they have introduced to the show, starting about three years ago. If you can't, don't be discouraged and try to go out and learn one, simply familiarize yourself with music and what you can do to songs to improve them in your favor. If you can play an instrument, make it known, make sure you can play it well, and broadcast your talent. Being musically inclined plays a large factor in this show now. Singing

Having the ability to sing, is definitely a major factor in the show in general. You have to be able to sing and this does not just mean that you should judge yourself. Ask your friends and family first but keep in mind they may lie to you or think everything you do is great. Try to base your ability on strangers too, possibly asking people that you know will be honest to you rather than simply consider your feelings. You need to be able to sing, it's as simple as that.

Stage Presence

When you step in front of an audience you need to have good stage presence. Eventually you may be able to command the audience's attention easily, but simply being able to captivate them enough to keep them interested is important. Stage fright is something that a lot of people experience whereas, some have large personalities and love attention. It's very hard to distinguish exactly what you need besides being true to yourself, performing well, and letting your personality shine through. Once you get these, playing the audience will follow.

Accepting Criticism

You have to be willing to be critiqued on live television and receive it well. This is for all of those who have attitudes when people insult them or the complete opposite and break down and cry. Being a person that is willing to accept what they need to improve upon and listen to the judges, are big parts of being on the show. They may insult you in front of American, can you handle it?

Marketability and Adaptability

Instead of being overly beautiful, there must be something about you that can be targetable to people. If you are already good-looking then there is nothing to it but for others try looking the best that you can. The competition is based on looks any way you look at it. Looks, personality, and talent are the three main components of the competition. Being adaptable while being true to yourself will also get you far in the competition. Adaptability is being able to sing a song in any genre while putting your own twist to it. For example, if you are a R & B singer and it's country week, then sing something like Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", originally sung by Dolly Parton. Put a song that has already jumped genre by an artist that sings like you. Why put more stress on yourself and the people who vote for you? The best way to end this is to be likable. If the voters like you, you will progress very far in the competition. Keep in mind the votes count.

Uniqueness

Always try to be unique without going over the top. Some aspect about you needs to read as only you. It could deal with your abilities, your back story, and your personality. Any type of combination of the three would be the best. Make your personality unforgettable, be exceptional in your talent, and make your upbringing memorable and that is the makings of a grand performer.

Paying attention to these traits will help you become the next American Idol. They can get you started with trying to progress in the competition. Take into account that the list can expand as the competition develops and the judges keep switching, but at this moment following these tactics can make you the next American Idol.
