American Idol 2008 (series 7) suggests a significant change in attitudes in America. The three semi-finalists are, without doubt, the safest on record. They have some talent. But the contestants with passion, with raw talent rather than polish, have been voted off. The finalists are nice. They cry when they go home. They choose safe renditions. Even the judges were uninspired with the performances on the semi-final.
Look, David Cook is a worthy contestant. And has probably provided the larger number of great performances. For example, Billie Jean, Music of the Night and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. These were crafted versions, and just about reached some of the grit and passion of previous winners. So if we put Jordin or Ruben or Kelly at 10, David would be about 8.
Syesha has wobbled from bland and frail (One Rock n’ Roll Too Many), all the way up to diva (an outstanding rendition of I Will Always Love You). She can turn in memorable performances. But there is perhaps a lack of craft or technique. Previous winners can mould a song, they can make it their own. David achieved this a few times. However, there are probably a million girls in choirs and groups throughout America who could stand alongside Syesha in terms of talent and skill. So I’d give Syesha a 6 on the winners’ scale.David Archuleta is bottom of the three for me. Yes, he has a sweet voice and uses it well. Yes he can sing pretty ballads. And yes, probably, he appeals to teen girls. But star quality, no. Vocal range, no (for example, Smoky Mountain). When a song style and range suits his voice, he can do a good job. Good, not great. Maybe when he and his voice matures some more he can achieve a good level. But for now he is a 5 on the scale.
They still beat 100,000 other people, so all three could go on to good careers. But am not certain any of them will achieve Kelly or Carrie status. Was it a surprise that 56 million voters chose the two boys? Not really, because they were the safe ones. The all-American apple-pie boys. The final ‘outsider’ was ejected from the new middle-America dream.
