Jordin Sparks a perfect winner for American Idol

E-mail Print PDF

Jordin Sparks a perfect winner for American Idol American Idol 2007 (series 6) is complete and the winner is most worthy. Jordin Sparks, for me, had to be the winner from way back in the eliminations. Just like with Ruben Studdard, the show can reveal some great talent, which Jordin most certainly is. The star-studded finale featured other great Idol finalists, with performances by Ruben, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, plus snippets on everyone else, including Fantasia Barrino.

Jordin has a spine-chilling vocal technique at times, with a combination of emotion, power and control that reminds you of just a handful of other divas. This talent, with the right songs and right producer(s), will surely provide a landmark first album. Not to take away from Jordin's moment, but Kelly Clarkson reminded us how good she is with a strong live performance of "Never Again" and so, again, reinforced the value of Pop Idol at finding great singers.

Music legends were also on hand during the winning show, with Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Tony Bennett all singing, often with some or all of the final 12 adding backing vocals. And there was a very well constructed and smooth Beatles medley, with a fantastic performance by Carrie Underwood. And spare a thought for the losing finalist Blake Lewis, although he did achieve a personal ambition in performing a duet with Doug E Fresh.

And just for the doubters, 74 million votes cannot be wrong!

Olympian hopes

Back in May there was a bit of an issue with under-performing Great Britain (Eurovision Sulk). Am happy to report the 2008 Olympics has seen a superb improvement. Now all we need is the UK musicians to take a leaf out of the UK athletes book - and start raising the bar on creativity, talent and skill.
